As discussed on the mailing list, this Friday (19 June), we will be having our lunch meeting at J. Cody’s at 11:30am (map below). Lunch meetings are usually pretty informal. Topic of discussion is open, as long as it has something to do with Agile. Please feel free to come and exchange ideas with everyone on hand.

As discussed on the mailing list, this Friday (5 June), we will be having our lunch meeting at J. Cody’s at 11:30am (map below). If barbecue isn’t your thing, enough of us will be buying that you should be fine bringing in a packed lunch. If you feel guilty, you can buy a drink there.

Robert Stackhouse has been a student of leadership in its various forms for over 15 years. Through personal experience and observation he has learned what works versus what doesn’t, what inspires versus what demoralizes, and what builds a good working relationship versus what can damage trust beyond any chance of repair.
Come see what he has to say, and maybe you can save yourself and those that work with you the pain of some of the leadership mistakes he has made and some of the mistakes he has witnessed.

The next AgileBCS bi-weekly lunch will be this Friday, 8 May, at 11:30am at Fuddrucker’s on Harvey. The 11:30 time should make it easier to get the space we need (even given we are calling ahead).

The next AgileBCS evening presentation is set for 8pm on April 28th at the TAMU General Services Complex (GSC) in Room 101A. For this presentation, we are partnering with the student Computer Science group, TACS.
Eric Huckabay will be presenting “Developing Your Development Career”. For those who don’t know him, Eric is a Lead Developer for Improving Enterprises with over ten years experience as a Software Developer. He brings with him an insider’s perspective on what teams look for in new teammates, how to find a team, and how to get noticed by a team you want to work with.
Eric will speak about credentials, branding, networking, and interviewing. He’ll also share his knowledge about some of the fundamental factors of those activities, namely communication and presentation.
If you are looking for a job, are unhappy with the one you’ve got, or are simply looking for some information for the future, this a presentation you won’t want to miss. There will also be plenty of opportunities to network with local developers after the presentation. Who knows, you might just leave with a job prospect in your pocket!

Our next meeting will be on March 31st at 7pm in the General Services Complex at A&M in room 101A
Here are the details for the next meeting as per Ed’s post to the AgileBCS list:
All,
Below is a short description of the presentation for our next meeting
on 3/31.
What is Quality? What are its measures? When can/should it be
measureable? We know that an agile project’s highest priority is to:
“satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of
valuable software”. We will explore when and where quality can begin
to address the quantitative value of deliveries during the life of an
agile project. Collaboratively working with the Product Owner to
ensure the Business Owner(s) receive the ROI they expect. This
presentation will provide real world experience and practical
approaches/tools to support the QA professional through this process.

There have been a few discussions lately about the future of AgileBCS. What should we do during our meetings? Should we try to move the focus to more project management-related topics? Should we make it a more general purpose Software development group? Should we move the meeting time (again)?
To make some progress, we’re going to have our first evening meeting at the Fox & Hound on Monday, March 9th at 7pm. The intent is for it to be a mostly informal get-together with some targeted discussion about the future of the group. This is on the BCS Web/Tech Community Calendar as well.
We’re also going to have our regularly scheduled meeting on Friday, March 13th at 12:30pm (location TBD). It will be a bit more focused, but the goal will be the same: make some decisions about group direction and start down the path.
In addition to the above, here are some other ideas that have been put on the table so far:
- Move to one meeting a month.
- Move the meetings to evenings.
- Have one evening meeting and one lunch meeting a month.
- Discuss less developer-centric topics.
- Have more presentation-oriented sessions. (Someone from the group or a guest presents to the rest of the group.)
- Switch between presentation-style and discussion-style meetings.
- Do another book review as a group.
- More actively use the Google group.
There are more ideas to be found; feel free to contribute to the list. However, what we really want to do is find something or a small set of somethings we can do that will provide the most value to the members of the group. Just like any Agile organization, we’ll want to periodically have a retrospective and adjust to continually provide the most value we can.
If you have an idea, you don’t have to wait for one of the meetings to discuss: just send an e-mail to the “agilebcs” Google group. If we’ve got it all worked out by Monday, then that can just be a purely fun, social event.

Howdy, our next meeting will be on Friday, February 27th and we will be discussing the proposed CodeDojo that is planned to take place every other Wednesday night.
Meetings of the CodeDojo are planned to be interspersed with Hack Night events (alternating Wednesdays). Hack Night is inspired by DorkBot. The purpose of Hack Night will be to encourage people to use technology to make things in new, creative, unusual and even artistic ways.
More to come on both the CodeDojo and Hack Night.
